What to do about the economy? Go Sustainable! | Beyond Suburbia | Making Sustainable Real!

The thing to do these days is get a more affordable lifestyle. Lower your gasoline bill, lower the monthly heating bill, lower the housing payment, lower healthcare costs….you name it…make it lower. The problem is gas prices are going up! and that makes everything more expensive.  It’s time to get creative. It’s time to go sustainable.

This is where we are as a planet, in the middle of reinventing ourselves… We need an affordable lifestyle…..one that is economically sustainable. Coincidently, there is a good chance our more affordable lifestyle is going to live lighter on the planet too.  So this reinvention, this retrofit, this more sustainable living is going to be good for the polar bears as well.

President Obama brought it to our attention in the State of the Union address… Americans have always invented themselves, and the time is here again….

I characterize  this  new lifestyle as  ”mixed use, mixed income neighborhoods, with lifelong learning and open space…..everywhere!”

Our car dominated sprawl way of life is going the way of the recent president of Egypt,  Hosni Mubarak, and now Moamer Kadhafi. As of this writing,  Moamer is hanging on, fighting with everything he has to keep the status quo…..we too are holding on, hoping and wishing and praying our economy is gonna come back.

Good luck with that.  1 million homes went into foreclosure last year 2010, and I saw a prediction 1.5 million more are going to go into foreclosure this year.

So what to do about the economy??  It’s time, hey it’s past time, to go Beyond Suburbia,  and reinvent our lifestyle sustainable.  I’ve been collecting good ideas of what else we can do beside suburbia for 30+ years, and like the people of Egypt and Libya, I just can’t stand it any longer.  I don’t know how this is all gonna work out, but I have got to start putting it out there.

Join me in the conversation.  Let’s do this thing. Let’s make sustainable real!
